Let’s Talk About Self Care

Hello again dear readers. Today I have decided to write a blog post about self-care for good mental health. Self care is something that everyone should incorporate into their daily lives, whether they are depressed or not in order to maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Or at least to aim for a balanced and healthy mind.

First I want to talk about Wentworth Miller, as he’s the reason I have decided to write this. For those of you who don’t know who he is, he is a wonderful human being, actor and advocate for mental health. In March this year he spoke out against a very hurtful meme that made a joke out of his body shape and mental state. Since then I have followed him on Facebook and have discovered what an amazing and strong person he is.

Something that he used to do on Facebook was post a ‘self-care’ status everyday, describing at least one specific thing he had done that day to focus on himself, care about himself and put himself first. I think he has stopped posting it now, but I know it has started a surge of people doing it online for themselves.

Just take a look at these people on twitter who have felt the direct positive effect of his work and are starting to care for themselves more:

So because of this I have decided to challenge myself to post one act of self-care that I have done for myself everyday and I encourage everyone to try it too. You don’t have to share it online, but just be conscious of the way you treat yourself. Hopefully you do more than one nice thing for yourself everyday, but sometimes it’s nice to remind yourself.

Self care doesn’t have to mean going for a run or eating healthy (well, I mean it can mean those things if you want it to), but it can mean reading a book, sitting in the sunshine, or painting your nails, or letting yourself have a lie-in. It can be as crazy as booking a spontaneous holiday or as simple making sure you take a shower. It can be whatever you want it to be as long as it’s not dangerous and makes you feel better. Basically, take a step back from the things you have to do and do something that you want to do. Something that makes you feel happy, or relaxed or will take a stress away from your life.

Take care of yourself. It’s really important.

I really love this list that Wentworth Miller shared on Facebook the other day. It has so many wonderful ideas, and shows how simple it can be to put yourself first. My Top 5 from the list are:

  1. Unplug for an hour. Switch everything to airplane mode and free yourself from the constant bings of social media and email.
  2. Activate your self-soothing system. Stroke your own arm, or if that feels too weird, moisturize.
  3. Take a quick nap. Ten to twenty minutes can reduce your sleep debt and leave you ready for action.
  4. Help someone. Carry a bag, open a door, or pick up an extra carton of milk for a neighbor.
  5. Take a home spa. Have a long bath or shower, sit around in your bathrobe, and read magazines.

I love all of the ideas on the list but these are my favourites because they are so simple but can really work to make your day feel better.

So. For me, Self-care today looked like Writing a Blog Post About Self Care. 

It may sound silly, but some days writing doesn’t feel enjoyable to me and it stresses me out, whilst other days it is my absolute favourite thing to do. I know deep down that if I were 100% myself and totally healthy that I wouldn’t have as many unproductive days as I do now, but it also means that on my good days, when I’m feeling better, that writing makes me feel ten times greater.

Writing is a part of me that has made me happy for as long as I can remember, and a goal for me is to have more stress free, happy days where writing brightens the day. So because of that, today, the one act of self-care that truly made my day was writing this post. It’s not about whether I get any readers or likes or shares, it’s about doing something that I love. It takes my mind off of unimportant stresses and I can just focus on me.
